I can say that both the videos are really very interesting, despite the fact that they differ from each other. But I liked the first video more than the second one, because there the director kept practically all the dialogues between the characters and focused on details which were certain symbolic. Also I liked the presence of the music in the background and the cast, especially a little girl named Sybil. I think that the main characters in the second video are picked up not really successfully as according to the story Seymour and Muriel have to be younger. But I really liked the scene on the beach in a shorter video. There is a very wonderful ocean landscape and sounds of the waves, what even for a moment I felt rays of the summer sun and splashes of salty water.
I agree with Polina. I like the first video more. I extremly like everything about it. And this video didn't change my opinion about the story and the characters. The only thing that I don't like is the colour of Sybil's bathing suit. It should be canary-yellow, as I remember. And, also Colin Day is amazing as Seymour, exactly how I think he should look like. But I think that the actress who plays Muriel in the second video is more suitable for this role. And it's just my opinion, that's how I imagine her. I also agree that Seymour and Sybil should be younger than they are on the second video. But what I like about this version is that the director shows us the scene in the Ocean Room. Of course it's all about director's imagination and it's how he sees the story, but in my opinion, the first version shows exactly what J.D.Salinger wanted to say.

Both videos are very interesting, but from my point of view the second one attracts my attention only because of the plot of the story while the first video introduce the great play of actors and I should say that we can hear practically every dialogue from the story written by Salinger. This video shows the mystery of the story, its peculiarities. The cast is perfect and the actors' play is brilliant! Even little Sybil succeeded in reproducing her words. Of course we know that there are very few films which save practically all peculiarities and aspects of the story and the first video is not the exception. I enjoyed watching it!

Gabuniya V. I like only the1st video. Actors are young and nice, dialogues are like in the book. The bathing suit of the girl must be yellow, but it isn't a very big mistake of authors of the video. In the 2nd video there is annoying voice behind dialogues, I don't like the manner of shooting and the actors are old and looking so tired. In fact, Muriel and her mother look like drug addicts, I'm sorry, but this is my opinion.

Only one thing, that i didn't like, is the colour of Sybil's bathing suit, as Katya had mentioned. And what about the second video,i did't love it very much. Even i have read the story, i didn't understand anything from this video. And, i think, the actors are old for this role.

The actor, who plays Seymour, plays flawlessly. His smile frightened me, and it is immediately clear that he is not normal.

If we compare these two film adaptation, I can say that the actors Colin Day, Lindsey Haun and Kara Stribling play very realistic and cope with their roles much better than the cast of the second video. The first video reveals a lot more sense, shows us the main idea of J.D. Salinger. I also want to note that I was very interested how directors show the last scene, when Seymour shoots himself. I think it is one of the key scenes. When I was watching the first film adaptation I took my breath away. And because of that I think the first version is better reveals and shows us everything that the author wanted to tell us.

As Vika says, if you didn't read the story, you couldn't understand the second video at all. Also I don't like that the director shows us Seymour as a really crazy man (the episode with piano, the episode when he sits on his bed in cut clothes). Of course, it is the vision of director and we can't challenge it, but in my opinion, Seymour is not so crazy as he is shown here. But I like the way Muriel plays.
So, I can say that both versions are good, but the first one is better, in my opinion.

I think that the sense of the story is lost in the second video.

I am not so strict about the fact that there are so many changes in the script in this version because it was interesting to see the story through the eyes of the other person. And I really liked the atmosphere in this video, it is so sad and serious and tense, just as I imagined.

As for Seymour, I didn't like neither the first nor the second. In my imagination, he looks a little different. More pensive, and in his eyes you can see a psychic disorder. In the second video I didn't like the language of a little girl. Besides, the woman in the elevator behaved too factitiously. By the way, none of the videos didn't show the scene where Seymour takes the girl by her ankles! And I think this is a very important aspect. And not without reason the author makes emphasize on this in the book.

Not only because I already know the plot, but also because I couldn`t visualise the scene between Sybil and Seymore before watching theese two videos. Now, as I like to say - what you`ve seen, can not be unseen. The first video was better than the second one. Believable acting, suitable atmosphere, and it`s close to the plot of the book (exept for Sybil`s swimsuit - Sallinger describes it as "canary-yellow", and here - it`s...brown?). The second one looks psychodelic for me, I barely made it to the end. Wrong age of the characters, strange Sybil, unnescessary narration, skipping a lot of important details of the story, so Seymore looks here as nor just a maniac, but a serial killer or some sort...well, too bad. So I liked (if I may say so) the first video. But still, I wouldn`t like to rewatch neither the first, nor the second one.

The plot is very difficult, and it is very unpleasant for me to read or watch a work of this kind. However, choosing from the two, I would prefer the first one. Nevertheless, the quality is very poor in the both screen versions. The first video has nicer-looking actors who have better acting skills. Also, the first video is much closer to the plot of the book. All the scenes almost perfectly identical to the scenes in the book. As in the book, we are made to think about the meaning of this strange work and observe the strange and unpleasant scenes.

Also I consider that in the first video the actors are chosen better than in the second one. The only thing I didn`t appreciate in the first video - why the canary-yellow swimsuit was exchanged for the brown one.

ОтветитьУдалитьBy the way, none of the videos didn't show the scene where Seymour takes the girl by her ankles! And I think this is a very important aspect. And not without reason the author makes emphasize on this in the book.
If be honest, both videos are not very good. Though the first video is much better than the second one. Firstly, the actors, chosen for these roles, play perfectly and they don't differ from the characters of the book, especially the actress playing Muriel. Secondly, the actions happening in the film are similar to the plot of the book. And thirdly, I like the way the film is made: there is a lot of closeup survey in it.

ОтветитьУдалитьI think that the first video is very similar to the plot of the book, it makes the video better, because some details are not missed. I also like the actress playing Muriel. In my opinion, she looks such a selfish and arrogant woman like in the book. But even so the actors playing Sybil and Seymour are worse than the actors in the second video, despite the fact that Seymour is not so young as it needs.
Another one thing I like about the first video is the end, when Muriel's face is showed by close-up. I suppose that she is happy and satisfyed with what has happened.
Nevertheless, the way the second video has been made is better because it follows by the Seymour's narration.
Two videos are so different, but I prefer the first screen version because of actors playing. All characters are emotional, professional, pretty and precisely as I imagined them. The first video covers the idea of the story better than the second one. It is closely connected with the plot of the book, all dialogues saved, and it can help to understand better the characters, their feelings, relationship between mother and daughter. But some details are differed from the book, for example, colour of Sybil`s bath suit (in the book it was yellow).
ОтветитьУдалитьI don`t like the second video at all. This video has some disadvantages. In the first place, the actors` voices are so monotonous, and Muriel and her husband are so old for their roles, and it was more dramatic than the first one. Director misses a lot of important dialogues and details. If you don`t read the book it`s so difficult to understand the meaning.
To start with , I think that no video adaptation could ever express everything , that the author wanted to tell. But if I to make a chose I` d prefer the first one .This video has better quality of picture and of the sound . As for the cast , it didn't satisfy me at all (except for the Seymore Glass at the second video. He is close to the one I saw in my imagination while I was reading the book). Moreover, I can clearly see an overacting , which irritates me a lot . Also, in my opinion , the fist video covers the idea of the story better , not missing some important details .
ОтветитьУдалитьFirst of all I must say - both videos are disturbing. Not only because I already know the plot, but also because I couldn`t visualise the scene between Sybil and Seymore before watching theese two videos. Now, as I like to say - what you`ve seen, can not be unseen.

Believable acting, suitable atmosphere, and it`s close to the plot of the book (exept for Sybil`s swimsuit - Sallinger describes it as "canary-yellow", and here - it`s...brown?). The second one looks psychodelic for me, I barely made it to the end. Wrong age of the characters, strange Sybil, unnescessary narration, skipping a lot of important details of the story, so Seymore looks here as nor just a maniac, but a serial killer or some sort...well, too bad. So I liked (if I may say so) the first video. But still, I wouldn`t like to rewatch neither the first, nor the second one.
Actually I don't like neither the first nor the second video.
ОтветитьУдалитьThis story seems to me wrong and frightening. The plot is very difficult, and it is very unpleasant for me to read or watch a work of this kind. However, choosing from the two, I would prefer the first one. Nevertheless, the quality is very poor in the both screen versions. The first video has nicer-looking actors who have better acting skills. Also, the first video is much closer to the plot of the book. All the scenes almost perfectly identical to the scenes in the book. As in the book, we are made to think about the meaning of this strange work and observe the strange and unpleasant scenes.
To my mind, the first video is much better because it is more similar in content to the book and it`s more meaningful. Also I consider that in the first video the actors are chosen better than in the second one. The only thing I didn`t appreciate in the first video - why the canary-yellow swimsuit was exchanged for the brown one.
ОтветитьУдалитьTo my mind I don't like both videos. It seems to me that they can't convey the main idea of the book to the viewers and also the plot of the book is badly picturized. Obviously,they are shot in awful quality: they have bad quality of the image and the sound. They seem to be similar to the home video, but not the screen version. But nevertheless the first video is more approximate to the book, than the second one. For example, in the first video there are actors, who look younger and prettier and have better acting skills than in the second one.
